Everyone is scared of being alone. I often think of the parable of the little African boy running through the forest. A little African boy is running through the forest, looking for his mommy. But there is nothing but forest. No mommy. And the camera pans out and there is nothing but forest for miles around. I suppose it’s not a parable, but an old Unicef commercial. But the message is still just as poignant: everyone is scared to be alone, because maybe it’s not that you just decided to stay in one night and work, and then ended up drinking too much. Maybe you’re really trapped in a forest and about to die, and only Unicef can save you, but they need to know which part of the forest you’re in—and they can’t figure that out unless you send them money.
